This cricket salt is actually more of like a Cricket Spice, due to the plethora of other ingredients. It is easy to make, and I like to use it anywhere I might otherwise use something like paprika. Just remember to reduce the amount of salt you add to any recipe, to compensate! Incredible Foods has made a video on how to prepare Cricket Salt.

Cricket Salt

Total: 15 mins; Serves 50

  • 1/4 cup kosher salt
  • Lime peel; a few scrapes from a fine grater
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cricket powder
  • 1 tablespoon smoked paprika
  • 1 tablespoon red chile pepper
  • Lime zest; finely grated
  • Fresh cinnamon; finely grated

1. In a medium mixing bowl or mortar and pestle, add salt, cricket powder, paprika, and chili pepper. Wash a lime and then scrape across a fine grater, to get zest. Use only the colored part; the white inside will taste bitter. Grate over bowl to add lime zest to ingredients. Do the same with some fresh cinnamon, grating just enough to add a tiny bit of cinnamon aroma.

2. Stir spices, or cover bowl and shake. You can use this anywhere you would use a dry red pepper, such as paprika, to flavor your dishes, or you can use it to season drinks, such as margaritas or bloody marys.
